VINHO BRANCO PAI ABEL 2014 - 18.5 points
The 2011 Garrafeira Quinta Dos Bageiras is the last of this issue's small vertical on the Garrafeira Baga. It is a complete wine, perhaps the best of the lot, although very unevolved. Fresh and lifted, this has gorgeous fruit to go with the acidity and structure. It is exuberant and youthful now, of course, but underneath there lurks the materials for a long life and complexity to come. It has plenty of power and a serious backbone. Combining the fruit, structure and balance here, we have a wine that should age well for at least three decades, maybe quite a bit more--Baga with this structure and fruit will not die easily. It seems surprisingly approachable just now, but I would expect it to close as the structure emerges and takes over. In any event, you will need to give this some time to let it acquire some complexity. It should show a lot better around 2020--although that may not be its peak. I did not have the price as of this writing, but the $30 price listed is what I was given for the last release. If that holds, it is a super bargain--for those with cellars and patience.
Wonderful cedary quince freshness allied to the yeasty lees character. Made only in the best years. Deep and rich and quince-like freshness. Such amazing intensity and length. Yeasty depth and biting freshness. Espumante Grande Reserva 2011

Mais c’est en bouche que ce mousseux dévoile ce qu’il a dans le ventre, plein de saveur, expressif, harmonieux, frais, parfait pour être dégusté tout au long du repas. ESPUMANTE QUINTA DAS BAGEIRAS - BRUTO NATURAL ROSÉ 2014 - 16.5 points
Is another gorgeous Garrafeira from Bageiras, produced only in what owner Mário Sérgio Alves Nuno believes are the best years. Sourced from very old vines (90+ years, said Mario), it was aged for 18 months in used 3000-liter Portuguese tonels. It has big everything: strong concentration of flavor, intensity on the finish, classic Baga nuances and plenty of acidity. This lets it all hang out, but it also works it out rather well. This wine is not for the shy; it is quite a mouthful. It could use a few more years in the cellar, despite its late release (it sort of fits this month’s theme on older wines), but it can be approached if you must. This, for most producers, wasn’t a great vintage, but you could make good wine in it and Bageiras sure did. At the price point, this is a super value. Late released, it should be in the marketplace now. 2010 GARRAFEIRA QUINTA DAS BAGEIRAS - 94 pontos
